About Taft Derby

Taft Derby is a 2026 honors graduate of Alta High School in Draper, Utah. On August 22, 2026, he will report to Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, where he will join the Corps of Cadets, major in Construction Management, and participate in Army ROTC with the goal of commissioning as an Army officer.

Throughout high school, Taft was active in NJROTC and served as commanding officer of the 53-cadet unit serving Canyons School District. He earned a three-year Army ROTC Advanced Designee scholarship through national competition and selected Norwich University, the nation's oldest private military college and the birthplace of ROTC, as the next step in that path.

In April 2026, Taft was preparing for the transition to college when his father, Curt Derby, became seriously ill. Only weeks before Curt's death on May 23, the family learned there were no further treatment options for his cancer. Four days later, Taft graduated from high school with honors.

The plan did not change.
